Adela Andea at Women and Their Work
Using commercial technological devices in unexpected biomorphic ways, Adela Andea creates light sculptures featured in her new show “Lux, Lumens and Candelas.” These sculptures writhe and stretch to create a rhythmic, seductive and intriguing ambiance that might remind viewers of a bunch of very different things: bio-luminescent sea life, cellular structures, discos and sci-fi space films. Opening reception 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 12 to 5 p.m. Saturdays through March 20. 1710 Lavaca St. 512-477-1064, www.womenandtheirwork.org.

“Lux, Lumens and Candelas: Adela Andea.”

Plastic forms, light emitting diodes, wires and cold cathode florescence lights — Houston artist Adela Andea weaves electronic components into vivid flurries of light and color. Her biomorphic installations and wall sculptures are part disco, part otherworldly architecture that delight and charm.

“I like to think about my art as incorporating as many layers of reality,” Andea has said.

Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Exhibit continues through March 20. Women & Their Work, 1710 Lavaca St. Free. www.womenandtheirwork.org

“O Stone, Be Not So”

Now that simple robotics technology is affordable and available for the home market, a slew of artists and experimental makers have been able to tinker like never before.

A group exhibit of up-and-comers from across the country — Andy Holtin, Jenny LeBlanc, Troy Stanley, Gregory Witt and Katie Wynne — features new kinetic sculpture and kinetic installations. Buzzing, whirring, moving — this art doesn’t just delight in the technology, but also questions the shifting culture that now surrounds our technological society.

Gallery hours: 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Exhibit continues through April 5. Mass Gallery, 507 Calles St. Free. www.massgallery.org
